Struggling to go to Confession

Sometimes we may struggle with shame, and hold our self back from going to confession. We think that our sin is too shameful. We wish our sin may have been of a different type, or of lesser gravity, or related to a different person, so that going to confession may not be so demanding.

If such reasons are holding you back from confession, it may be helpful to realize one thing. It seems to me, that people come to confession for only two reasons. Every sin has as it’s root, only two reasons: lust and pride.

It is also helpful to know that lust has two parts: lust of the eyes and the lust of the flesh, which together with pride are the three forms of temptation.

While these two root causes may manifest in multiple ways in the lives of people [e.g. pride, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, sloth, greed] and result in different sins, it is at root these two reasons that drive every sin.

Every person in the confession line is coming to confess these two sins. And every person who is not coming to confession, is not coming to confession because of these two sins. Every person in life is struggling with these two sins.

It is so because human beings are a unity of body and soul. Lust arises in the body and pride arises in the soul.

So don’t let shame hold you back. Every person is at confession for the same reasons.

Go to confession, so that you may be FORGIVEN AND so that you may be HEALED.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness [1 John 1:9]

If we don’t go to confession, we stay in our sin and our shame and our unrighteousness.
